Testimonial 3 I was 51 years old when I had a stroke on July 28th, 2004. It was a fairly dense posterior brain stem CVA. I was in hospital for 21 weeks and to this day still suffer with swallowing difficulties and balance issues. I have no legacy brain malfunction although I do have minor deficit issues on my right side.. I was also told by the doctors that I would never walk again but through sheer determination and a regime of exercises , I am now able to walk with the aid of sticks. Earlier in 2006, I purchased a three wheeler push bike and now ride it for about 5 kms along the water front of Woy Woy where there is lots of grass to offer better resistance which allow me to build up my muscle strength. I am also a member of the local gym which allows me to do a range of exercises to develop strength and balance. I go to the gym at least twice a week. In June 2006 I underwent a total knee replacement on my right leg as the cartilage damage was so great that it was hindering my recovery from the stroke. The decision to have the operation was the best decision I had made in many years although I did not think so in the first few days after the operation. WAGS and Scallywags have been very good for both me and my wife Jill who doubles as my carer. The friendships we have developed have been special. The understanding and encouragement shown by all has been an integral part of my rehabilitation. I find that I don’t have to explain myself in any way as others are in the same situation as myself and know what it is that I’m going through. Prior to my stroke I was a Public Servant and managed a Computer Project Office that had 4 people working in it full time and many project managers. At any one time we managed about $8million worth of projects. Today, I am medically retired and enjoy our garden, WAGS and associated activities. Bill McNamara |
